Our group was split into two teams to develop two concepts for presentation to the client. Our group focused on communicating the potential for pixels becoming the new medium for art just as photography overtook oil paintings in history.
The other group generated a concept based around the newspaper, mixed with a digital display. In the end, the client asked us to combine aspects of their concept into our pixel concept — bold headlines and a digital aspect to the display.
My Primary roll was designing some of the physical assets including posters, postcards, and event signage. This came with the task of managing image usage appropriately. Since the AI images were not large in size, the printed assets needed smaller use of the images, so, rather than filling space with an image, I arranged the placement of a few smaller images to look random as if they were floating pixels. This arrangement is also how we chose to display the actual artwork in the exhibit.
I also designed the digital signage for the exhibit. Being digital, the images were able to be bigger compared to the printed assets, so I created the visual of one large image dissolving into tiny pixels for use on screens.
This project not only involved designing the assets and layout of the exhibit, but we were also tasked with implementing our work into the physical space of the gallery. Together, we generated a space that encouraged the gallery's audience to think about the future and raise questions about the direction of art.
After the curation of the exhibit, we planned a discussion event with the gallery director, inviting our audience to talk about AI, AI's application in art, and our team's perspective while working on the exhibit.
My teammate, as well as myself, spoke on behalf of our whole group.
